Night Vision Equipment for Hunting and Tactical Use

When the sun goes down, many animals become active. Hogs, coyotes, foxes, and other predators prefer the cover of darkness. To hunt them effectively, you need the ability to see in low light or complete darkness. Night vision equipment for hunting and tactical use gives you that ability. Whether you need goggles for hands free operation, a rifle scope for accurate shooting, or a monocular for scouting, we have the night vision gear you need.

How Night Vision Works

Modern night vision technology comes in two main types for hunting and tactical applications. Digital night vision uses a high sensitivity digital sensor to capture available light, including infrared light that is invisible to the human eye. An infrared night vision device includes an IR illuminator that acts like a flashlight in the infrared spectrum, allowing you to see even in total darkness.

Traditional image intensifier night vision amplifies existing ambient light from the moon and stars. These devices do not require an IR illuminator in most conditions but are generally more expensive than digital models. Both technologies have their place, and we carry options in both categories.

Night Vision Goggles

Digital night vision goggles are worn on your head using a head mount or helmet mount. This leaves your hands free to operate equipment, navigate terrain, or handle your weapon. Goggles are ideal for walking to your hunting spot in the dark, setting up equipment, or any situation where you need to move while seeing in low light conditions.

Night Vision Rifle Scopes

Night vision rifle scopes for hunting mount directly to your firearm. They allow you to see your target and take accurate shots in darkness. Many models include built in IR illuminators and reticle options designed specifically for low light shooting. Some also feature video recording so you can capture your hunt.

Night Vision Monoculars

A night vision monocular for observation is a handheld device used with one eye. It is the most versatile night vision format. Use it to scan fields, identify targets, or scout hunting areas. Monoculars are compact, lightweight, and easy to carry in a pocket or pack. They are an excellent entry point into night vision.

Key Features to Consider in Night Vision Equipment

Generation or Technology Type

Digital night vision is the most affordable and accessible option. It works well for most hunting situations out to 100 to 200 yards with IR illumination. For longer ranges and the best image quality, traditional Generation 2+ or Generation 3 night vision is superior but comes at a higher price point.

IR Illuminator Power

All digital night vision devices require an IR illuminator to see in total darkness. The more powerful the IR illuminator, the farther you can see. Some devices have adjustable IR power levels to save battery life when full power is not needed. External IR illuminators can also be added to extend range.

Detection and Recognition Range

Detection range is how far away you can see that something is there. Recognition range is how far away you can identify what it is. For night vision for predator hunting, you typically need recognition range of 100 to 200 yards for ethical shots. Check the specifications of each model to ensure it meets your needs.

Battery Life

Night vision devices consume power, especially when using the IR illuminator. Look for models with at least 4 to 6 hours of battery life. Many devices use common AA or CR123 batteries, which are easy to carry spares for extended hunts.

Best Applications for Night Vision Equipment

  • Predator hunting for coyotes, foxes, and bobcats
  • Wild hog hunting at night when hogs are most active
  • Property surveillance and security patrols
  • Search and rescue operations in low light conditions
  • Wildlife observation and research after dark
  • Camping and outdoor navigation at night

Digital Night Vision vs Traditional Night Vision

Digital Night Vision: More affordable, can be used during daylight without damage, often includes video recording, requires IR illuminator in total darkness. Best for most hunters.

Traditional Night Vision (Gen 2+/Gen 3): Higher image quality, better low light performance without IR, more expensive, can be damaged by bright light. Best for professional tactical use.
